The 2018 European Innovation Week was a joint initiative of the European Commission in collaboration with Taiwan government agencies. It featured a series of seminars, networking events and company site visits aimed at bringing Taiwanese and European companies, clusters and institutions together to facilitate business and research cooperation.

Opening Ceremony

At the opening ceremony, remarks were made by the guests of honour Antti Peltomäki, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship, SMEs (DG GROW) at the European Commission; Dr Shih Jun-ji, Vice Premier of the Executive Yuan, Shen Jong-chin, Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and Lee Ying-yuan, Minister of the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA). 

2018 EU-Taiwan Circular Economy International Conference

Date: 4 June 2018

The full-day conference was arranged by DG GROW, the EPA, the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO) and the ECCT’s Low Carbon Initiative (LCI). It brought together policy makers, industry experts, representatives from clusters and NGOs from Europe and Taiwan and an audience of around 150 to discuss the latest development in three major areas: 1) Plastics; 2) Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and 3) Construction & demolition waste. The event featured a keynote speech on the topic “Implementing European policy for the circular economy in Europe” by DG GROW Director Gwenole Cozigou and presentations by representatives from ECCT member companies, including Richard Northcote from Covestro, Thanindra Virarusme from IKEA, Eric Yu from Philips Lighting Taiwan and Alexander Martin from REMEX Mineralstoff GmbH. The conference was followed by a full-day official industrial dialogue, cluster seminar and B2B matchmaking event in Taipei on 5 June, and a full-day circular economy site tour to Tainan on 6 June.

EU-Taiwan Smart Manufacturing Seminar

Date: 4 June 2018

The seminar was co-organized by DG GROW, the European Economic and Trade Office

(EETO), the ECCT, the Industry Development Bureau (IDB) and the Smart Machinery Industry Promotion Office, under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), to explore and expand cooperation opportunities between the EU and Taiwan in smart manufacturing. At the event opening remarks were made by the guests of honour, after which presentations were given by representatives from leading companies and experts in smart manufacturing from Taiwan and Europe to share with the audience the latest trends and cases of factory automation and digitalisation. Panel discussions were held after the presentations to explore potential business cooperation between enterprises in the EU and Taiwan. Opening remarks were made the by Dr Kung Ming-hsin, Deputy Minister of the MOEA, Antti Peltomäki and ECCT Vice Chairman, Giuseppe Izzo. Presentations were given by the following representatives of ECCT member companies: Volker Sauer from Bosch Rexroth Hydraulics & Automation (Shanghai), Jackson Seng from Schneider Electric (Taiwan/Philippines), Milo Ten from Atlas Copco, Polly Yang from STMicroelectronics and Tino Hildebrand from Siemens Taiwan. 

EU-Taiwan Smart Mobility Seminar

Date: 4 June

The seminar was organised by the European Commission, GNSS.asia, the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC) and the Taiwan Telematics Industry Association (TTIA). It brought together key players from the EU and Taiwan to discuss all the possibilities for “smart” applications and services for mobility. Opening remarks were made by Antti Peltomäki and Wang Kwo-tsai, Deputy Minister of the MOTC. Participants were provided insights into future trends in the industry, including autonomous driving, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and connected vehicles. The following representatives from ECCT member companies gave presentations: Giuseppe Izzo from STMicroelectronics Taiwan, Samuel Hsu from Dassault Systems Taiwan Branch Office and Angela Hsiao, Taiwan Team Leader for GNSS.asia.

Wind Power Cluster Seminar

Date: 4 June 2018

The seminar was organised by the European Commission in conjunction with the Bureau of Energy (BOE) and the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC). The event brought together wind industry clusters and companies in Taiwan and Europe to share their experiences and provide a platform for networking to encourage future cooperation. Opening remarks were made by Antti Peltomäki and Yang Chih-ching, Deputy Director-General of the IDB. Presentations were made by representatives of the following European clusters: Aerospace Valley, Basque Energy Cluster, Inteligentna Energija, Merinova, Cambridge Cleantech as well as the ECCT’s Wind Energy committee. The last hour of the seminar was allocated to pitches from companies from the EU and Taiwan.

Taiwan-EU Cluster Cooperation Seminar

5 June 2018

The seminar, organised by the Chinese National Federation of Industries (CNFI), featured introductions to clusters from representatives of clusters from both Europe and Taiwan and a panel discussion of success stories in promoting Taiwan-EU cluster cooperation. The main objective of the seminar was to provide Taiwan and EU clusters opportunities to increase mutual understanding and create opportunities for cooperation in the near future. At the event opening remarks were made by Fred Huang, Advisor to the Chinese National Federation of Industries and Christophe Guichard, Team leader for Cluster Internationalisation from DG GROW after which Mrs Noelia Dosil from the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP) gave a presentation. This was followed by a short introduction to each of the clusters present by their representatives. The seminar ended with a panel discussion on success stories of promoting EU-Taiwan cooperation, featuring the Taiwan Offshore Wind Turbine Foundation and Marine Engineering Association and panellists Dr Vesselin Vassilev and Andrea Caballé.  

Horizon 2020 Info’ Day in Taiwan (Taipei)

Date: 6 June 2018

The seminar provided information on opportunities to participate in Horizon 2020, practitioners’ experiences, and discussions on establishing sustainable EU-Taiwan collaboration. It was organised by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), the Department of International Cooperation and Science Education under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Science and Technology Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium and National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs). 

Conference on EU-Taiwan Medical Device Regulation

Date: 6 June 2018

The conference was arranged by DG GROW and the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and co-organised by the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the ECCT. It brought together officials from DG GROW, the FDA and industry representatives to jointly introduce recent and pending changes to both EU and Taiwan regulations concerning medical devices. The full-day event was attended by an audience of around 400 people from government, the corporate sector and academia. At the event opening remarks were made by Antti Peltomäki and Wu Shou-mei, Director-General of the FDA, after which government representatives from the EU and Taiwan outlined major policy changes in the morning session. Erik Hansson, Deputy Head of Unit, Health Technology and Cosmetics, from DG GROW gave an overview of medical device regulation reform in the EU while Hung Yueh-Tzu from the FDA gave a summary of the regulatory environment in Taiwan. The afternoon session featured presentations by a representative from a Notified Body and the following three ECCT member companies: Dr Adelheid Schneider from Roche Diagnostics, Paul Swift from Alcon and Heinrich Martens from Fresenius Kabi. The speakers shared their strategies, best practices and experiences in preparing for regulatory changes. Q&A panel discussions followed both the morning and afternoon sessions and the event was concluded with remarks by Erik Hansson and Chu Yu-roo, Deputy Director of the FDA’s Division of Medical Devices and Cosmetics.  

5th Taipei 5G Summit

Date: 7 June 2018

The summit was organised by the 5G Technology Program Office of the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), under the MOEA, the European Commission, ITRI, the Institute for Information Industry (III), the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), the Taiwan IOT Technology and Industry Association (TwIoTA) and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). It featured presentations on the current global 5G status as well as the latest developments in artificial intelligence, architecture and applications, 5G use cases, opportunities for EU-Taiwan collaboration and small cell development. Opening remarks were made by MOEA Minister Shen Jong-chin, Antti Peltomäki and Chan Ting-I, Chairperson of the National Communications Commission. Presentations were given by the following representatives from ECCT member companies: Rajeev Agrawal from Nokia and Marie Hogan from Ericsson.
